Information

Cervical conisation is a minor surgical procedure in which a small portion of cervical tissue is removed. It is most commonly performed in cases where precancerous changes have been identified. Thanks to modern surgical techniques, conisation can now be carried out on an outpatient basis, with no need for hospitalisation. The procedure is performed by a doctor from our Oncology Prevention Centre, who has extensive experience with this type of surgery.

You are welcome to come to us even if you are not yet a client of our clinic and have received your diagnosis elsewhere.

When is cervical conisation necessary

Conisation becomes necessary when more extensive changes in the cervical tissue indicate a risk of cancer developing. The first sign is usually an abnormal result from a cervical smear taken during a routine preventive check-up. This brings the client to a doctor at our Oncology Prevention Centre, where the doctor holds a specialist licence authorising them to perform colposcopic assessments — a detailed examination and diagnosis of changes in the cervical tissue.

For clients where more extensive findings confirm precancerous changes, conisation is the appropriate course of action: the affected parts of the cervix are removed, always taking into account the precise diagnosis and the client's full medical history.

Early diagnosis and cervical conisation are among the most important tools in preventing cervical cancer.

How is the procedure performed

The procedure is preceded by a pre-operative consultation during which your doctor will explain the surgical process and give you all the information you need to prepare. Conisation is performed under analgosedation, a combination of light general sedation and local anaesthesia.

The exact technique used depends on whether the precancerous changes are on the surface or inside the cervix, and also on whether you are still planning to have children. Depending on these factors, we select the most appropriate technique and instruments for removing the affected tissue. After the procedure and a period of rest at the clinic, you are free to go home. We recommend bringing someone with you and avoiding driving on the day.

Recovery after cervical conisation

After cervical conisation, you can expect a rest period of approximately one month, during which it is important to avoid sexual intercourse, sport and physical activity, as well as the use of tampons. Some mild lower abdominal discomfort and light spotting are normal in the first few days after the procedure.

To help prevent infection, we will prescribe a form of vaginal disinfection, such as antiseptic vaginal tablets. We also recommend supporting healthy healing of the cervical tissue, for example with hyaluronic acid vaginal suppositories, which are available over the counter at pharmacies.
