Oncology Prevention Centre (OPC)

The Oncology Prevention Centre is designed for patients who receive an abnormal cervical finding during a routine preventive examination. Examinations here are performed by a specialist with a dedicated licence to carry out colposcopic assessments. A finding from a routine check-up is typically general in nature — it indicates that certain parameters fall outside the normal range. Based on this finding and a more detailed examination, our specialist can determine the precise nature and extent of the risk and recommend the most appropriate course of treatment.

Prevention and specialised examinations are among the key reasons why cervical cancer is successfully managed in the Czech Republic, and why the disease does not develop in the vast majority of at-risk patients. The Oncology Prevention Centre is part of our private gynaecological clinic, GYN MEDICO, and as such offers the same comfort, facilities and professional care as all our other practices.

When to visit the Oncology Prevention Centre

You can book an appointment at the Oncology Prevention Centre when the results of a cytological smear from your cervix show abnormal values. If you are already a patient at our clinic, your gynaecologist will refer you directly to the Centre, and you can then arrange a specific appointment with the Centre's nurse. You are also welcome to come with a finding from another facility. In that case, please bring the results of your most recent examination and a referral from your gynaecologist to your first visit.

What to expect during your examination at the OPC

The colposcopic assessment is performed by a gynaecologist with a specialist licence for this type of examination. The doctor will first review your findings and discuss your medical history with you. This is followed by a series of examinations using a colposcope — an instrument used to examine the cervix. The doctor examines surface changes in the mucous membrane (epithelium) and changes in the shape and arrangement of blood vessels. A small tissue sample is often required for further histological analysis. The sample collection is no different in duration or discomfort from a standard sample taken during a routine check-up. In some cases, the doctor may also perform a biopsy or HPV testing.

Individual findings are described using specialist terminology that helps characterise the finding and indicate the likely severity of the observed changes. Based on the finding, the doctor will determine the next steps. For minor findings, we establish a schedule of regular follow-up examinations. For more significant findings, the doctor may recommend a cervical conisation — a minor surgical procedure that involves removing a small portion of cervical tissue. If a procedure is needed, the appointment will be arranged with the nurse following the examination.
