Information

The vaginal opening of a young woman is naturally narrow, but like the rest of the body it is subject to the effects of ageing and gradually loses its tone and structure over time. Vaginal births and certain procedures used to assist delivery, particularly an episiotomy, can also alter the shape and structure of the vaginal opening. Vaginal opening repair is a surgical procedure in which the vaginal opening is narrowed and restored to the appearance and structure it had in youth and before childbirth.

When to consider vaginal opening repair

Vaginal opening repair is an option whenever you are unhappy with the appearance of your intimate area and would like it to feel narrower and more youthful. A vaginal opening that has become too wide or has lost its tone can affect the experience of sexual intercourse, and may also have practical and health implications, such as difficulty keeping a tampon in place or urinary incontinence.

At GYN MEDICO, our specialist aesthetic gynaecology doctors are happy to discuss the current state of your intimate area with you and recommend the procedure that will achieve the rejuvenating and tightening effect you are looking for. Vaginal opening repair can also be combined with vaginoplasty or perineoplasty where needed.

How is the procedure performed?

During the initial consultation, you and your doctor will discuss the current state of your intimate area, along with your expectations and wishes. Complete discretion is a matter of course for our doctors and all clinic staff. If you decide to go ahead, your doctor will explain the procedure in detail during the consultation, including the anaesthesia and analgosedation options. Pre-operative examinations include a blood test and ECG. Any medications that affect blood clotting need to be stopped at least one week before the procedure.

The procedure takes place in our procedure room under a combination of local anaesthesia and general analgosedation. Once the anaesthesia has taken effect, the surgeon makes the necessary incisions and removes the required amount of excess tissue, then closes the edges of the vaginal opening with dissolvable sutures. The procedure typically takes around 60 minutes.

Recovery

The procedure is performed on a day-case basis. After the surgery and a period of rest at the clinic, you are free to go home. It is a good idea to bring someone with you on the day and to keep the day of the procedure free of any significant work or other commitments. A rest period of approximately two weeks with no strenuous physical activity is recommended after the procedure. Careful intimate hygiene is also essential.

Any discomfort in the treated area in the early days can usually be managed with standard over-the-counter pain relief at normal doses. Cooling the area is a helpful complement to recovery and can reduce swelling around the incision sites. You can return to your full sexual life approximately four to five weeks after the procedure.
