Information

Perineoplasty is a surgical procedure to repair and tighten the muscles of the perineum — the area between the genitalia and the anus. In women, this area can be damaged by tearing or surgical incision during childbirth, or as a result of injury. Perineoplasty strengthens the damaged muscles, addresses any associated symptoms and can also improve the experience of sexual intercourse.

The procedure is performed directly at GYN MEDICO in our fully equipped procedure room. You are welcome to book a consultation and aesthetic procedures with us even if you are not yet a client of our clinic.

When to consider perineoplasty

Damage to the perineal area can have both aesthetic and health implications. Urinary incontinence is among the most common consequences of weakened muscles in the area surrounding the genitalia and urinary tract. Some women also experience discomfort or even pain during sexual intercourse as a result of perineal damage, while others are simply unhappy with the appearance of the intimate area.

Whatever your reasons, please do not hesitate to get in touch and ask for a consultation. Together we will find the right solution for you and your wellbeing.

How is the procedure performed?

The procedure is preceded by a consultation with your doctor and pre-operative examinations. Your doctor will discuss the extent of the procedure with you, explain what to expect during the surgery and recovery, and talk through the anaesthesia and analgosedation options. You will also be asked about any known allergies to medications. Pre-operative examinations include a blood test and ECG. Any medications that affect blood clotting need to be stopped at least one week before the procedure.

The procedure is performed under a combination of local anaesthesia and general analgosedation. This means that the perineal area is numbed by injection, while analgosedation is administered as an inhaled gas to further reduce sensitivity to pain. Excess tissue in the perineal area and vaginal opening is removed by incision, and the edges of the incisions are then carefully refined. The wound is closed with dissolvable sutures.

Recovery

After the procedure, you will rest at the clinic before heading home. It is a good idea to bring someone with you on the day. A rest period of approximately one week is recommended, along with careful hygiene in the perineal area. Some discomfort at the site of the procedure is normal in the first few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief if needed. You can return to sexual activity and exercise four to six weeks after the procedure.
