Information
Paediatric and adolescent gynaecology is a distinct subspecialty of gynaecology focused on the care of children and young clients from birth through to the onset of sexual activity. Check-ups are not mandatory, but if any gynaecological concerns arise in girls or young women, it is best not to delay a visit.
At GYN MEDICO, paediatric gynaecology is provided by MUDr. Peter Koliba, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Bulovka University Hospital, who holds a specialist qualification in Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology.
Most common concerns
- Labial adhesions – fusion of the vaginal opening mucosa, most common in children under 5
- Vaginal discharge in girls before their first period
- Early onset of menstruation in children under 10
- Irregular bleeding between periods
- Premature development of secondary sexual characteristics – pubic hair growth and breast development in children under 10
- Foreign body in the vagina
- Injuries to the genital area
- Itching or burning in the genital area
- Strong odour in the genital area
- Severe pain in the genital area or lower abdomen
- Irregular periods
- Absence of menstruation after the age of 15
What to expect during the examination
The examination always takes place in the presence of a legal guardian, and its approach is adapted to the age of the child. The doctor carefully and gently explains to both the child and their accompanying adult what will happen, with close attention to the child's emotional comfort throughout.
The examination begins with a conversation during which the doctor records the child's current height and weight and asks about medical history and any concerns. The doctor then examines the external genitalia and, depending on the type and nature of the issue, may perform an internal examination using a vaginoscope, with the option of taking a culture swab or hormonal cytology sample. An ultrasound examination is also carried out. Based on the findings, the doctor will recommend a course of treatment and, if needed, schedule a follow-up appointment.
