Information
The hymen is a mucosal fold that partially covers the vaginal opening. Despite the many cultural and religious myths surrounding it, its physiological purpose is simple: it acts as a natural barrier that offers some protection against microorganisms entering the body. The hymen varies in shape from woman to woman, and in most women before their first sexual experience it has a small opening that allows menstrual blood to flow out. During sexual intercourse, and sometimes also during masturbation, tampon use or physical activity, the hymen is naturally disrupted, and most women can continue their sexual lives without any difficulty. In some cases, however, a surgical procedure called a hymenotomy is needed to address or remove the hymen.
