Information

Although the hymen is, from a medical perspective, simply a mucosal fold, this small part of the body carries considerable symbolic significance in many cultures and societies, including our own. In numerous religious traditions, the hymen is regarded as a symbol of a woman's purity and virtue. It is entirely understandable that a woman whose hymen has been disrupted — whether through sexual intercourse or other means — may find herself in a situation where having an intact hymen again matters deeply to her. This is why we offer hymenoplasty at our clinic: a minor surgical procedure in which the hymen is reconstructed.

If you decide to go ahead with the procedure, you can count not only on the full facilities of a modern private clinic and the professional care of our doctors, but also on the absolute discretion of every member of our team.

Why do women choose hymenoplasty?

Women come to us for hymenoplasty for a variety of reasons. Religious reasons are among the most common — many traditions require that a woman enter marriage with her virginity intact. It is worth noting that sexual intercourse is not the only way the hymen can be disrupted; it can also occur during masturbation, tampon use or physical activity. For women who are not religiously motivated, hymenoplasty is most often sought following a change of partner, with a wish or need to feel "intact" at the start of a new relationship. The procedure can also play an important therapeutic role for women who have experienced sexual abuse.

How is hymenoplasty performed?

Hymenoplasty is a minor surgical procedure in which the doctor reconstructs the area of the vaginal opening with a focus on restoring the hymen. It is carried out under analgosedation, a form of light general sedation.

When planning the procedure, your doctor will ask about any hormonal contraception or other medications you take that affect blood clotting, and will advise you on any adjustments to dosage or temporary discontinuation needed to ensure the procedure and your recovery go smoothly.

On the day of the procedure, you must not eat, drink, chew gum or smoke from midnight onwards. The procedure is performed in a standard gynaecological position. The doctor rejoins the individual parts of the disrupted hymen or its folds, sutures the mucous membranes of the vaginal opening and in doing so recreates a partial barrier — the hymen. The length of the procedure varies depending on the extent of the disruption.

Recovery

After the procedure and a period of rest at the clinic, you are free to go home once the effects of the sedation have worn off. Recovery after hymenoplasty is generally straightforward and any complications that do arise are usually easy to manage. A slightly elevated temperature may occur after the procedure, which is a sign that the body has begun the healing process and typically resolves on its own before long.

Mild bleeding at the site of the procedure and some discomfort are normal and can be managed with standard over-the-counter pain relief if needed. It is also important to maintain careful hygiene around the perineal area after the procedure to prevent infection. Most clients return to work the following day. We recommend avoiding strenuous physical activity for one week after the procedure. Sexual intercourse is possible after approximately four weeks, once the vaginal opening has fully healed.
