Information

An episiotomy, or perineal incision, is a fairly common practice in obstetrics used to assist the passage of the baby through the birth canal. The resulting scar can, however, be a source of aesthetic discomfort or even physical difficulty for some women.

At GYN MEDICO, we offer several approaches to smoothing episiotomy scars, always tailored to each client's individual needs and wishes. Our aesthetic gynaecology specialists have access to the latest equipment and technology, allowing them to achieve excellent results in the shortest possible time.

When to consider episiotomy scar correction

The appearance of a scar left after an episiotomy depends on several factors, particularly the depth of the original incision and how the healing progressed after birth. If you have been left with a scar that causes physical discomfort or that you are simply unhappy with aesthetically, a minor procedure can help reduce and smooth it. The appearance of the intimate area improves as well, which can have a positive effect on your confidence.

Hyaluronic acid treatment

Hyaluronic acid injection is a highly effective and minimally invasive way to treat episiotomy scars. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in the body, found in cell walls and bodily fluids. It binds water, which hydrates and smooths tissue and keeps it supple.

For episiotomy scars, we inject hyaluronic acid directly into the scarred tissue using a fine needle, under local anaesthesia. The acid disperses through the tissue and begins to hydrate and firm it, and the smoothing effect appears very soon after the procedure. Hyaluronic acid remains active in the tissue for around 12 to 18 months, after which a repeat treatment is recommended to keep the scar as inconspicuous as possible.

This treatment is also suitable for clients who are still planning to have children.

Surgical scar excision

Another option is surgical removal of the scar. This minor procedure is particularly recommended for larger or more prominent scars. It is performed under local anaesthesia.

The doctor uses a scalpel to excise the original scar tissue and then carefully closes the edges of the wound with fine dissolvable sutures, leaving the new scar as small and unobtrusive as possible.

Healing after the procedure is quick, requiring approximately one week of careful hygiene and rest to allow the new, smaller scar to heal well.
